Minutes - 1 February 2006

Members present: Hennig (chair), Duke, Gaskell, Skuce, Quirion (minutes)
Guests: Wenger

1. Barton as an SFX Source

Rich showed what he had done with adding the SFX button to test Barton. We discussed many details of the button placement and functionality on various Barton screens.

We'll invite Beth to our next meeting and continue the discussion then after more progress has been made. When we have a working test version ready, we'll have a brown bag lunch and go to PSMG and other places to communicate this to other staff.

Notes from our white board discussion:

Brief results: list

  • some options we discussed and decided not to do:
    • after availability
    • replace URL line - label?
    • new field (what is the right label?)
    • replace "electronic location" with button (this one is good, but not do-able, given that many e-items don't have this)
  • preferred choice:
    • above locations (as the first one, before print and "internet resource" line)
    • if we do it, also do this:
      • change text of "internet resource..." to something like "click
SFX button" (still need to figure out what this should really say)
      • remove URL from display

Brief results: table

  • replace URL column with button
  • make button smaller
  • show electronic access first in lists

Full record

  • above locations (as the first one)
  • move URL field lower in the record

Holdings

  • e-only: (did we decide for this?)
  • print & electronic:"get this item" (specific button) -- (if it can be done conditionally) and regular button at top above location

Other factors:

    • print and electronic: e-date range
    • piggybacked records
    • can Beth populate MARC record from SFX, including changes?

Continue discussing possible changes to the button

  • smaller?
  • "find it" vs. "electronic access"
  • include SFX logo or not?

2. ILLiad and SFX

We looked at the test SFX menus that will show from First Search databases, and agreed on the following wording for the menu:

Heading: Interlibrary Borrowing:
If not owned by MIT, request via ILLiad

3. User needs update

Progress is being made on the interviews by all of the groups. By the 27th, most of the groups will have finished. We've been learning a lot so far from the interviews, and will need to create a report to share the results with others in the MIT Libraries. We'll go through the results on the 27th. Nicole's started a page about this with our documents and interview scripts/materials on the staff web.

4. Dewey Research Advisor
Will be live soon, and is available to preview now. Millicent will send an announcement out soon to PS lib. After it's launched, we'll discuss it at a future meeting. Millicent will send us a link to the Sloan Space page for Dewey soon.

Next meeting:

Wednesday, February 27, 2:00 PM, Cubespace.
Guests: Rich Wenger, Beth Siers
