SFX items
Barton as an SFX source:
Rich reported that progress is beginning on a script for matching items from the SFX knowledgebase with items in Barton. Beth will be working with him on that. We hope to have a test set up for viewing in test Barton by sometime in January. This is the first step toward enabling Barton as an SFX source.
SFX & IEEE conference proceedings:
Rich is working with someone from Notre Dame on script for matching isbns and issns for IEEE conferences, so it will work reliably for finding these conferences via SFX. This opens up a method to use perhaps for other societies as well (ACM, SPIE and others).
RSS feeds for new books from ALEPH:
Rich is working with Owen Stephens on getting this to work.

User Needs Assessment
A. Background info:
Library survey results (Millicent) - she updated us on a few relevant items from survey results.
Steve will send us names of people who volunteered to help further, we can use this as a starting point for getting volunteers.
We will continue to discuss the survey results as they become available.
Demographics from admissions: (Christine) - no luck, couldn't get presentation on "millienials" etc., got statistical data, still hoping to find out about a current IAP presentation by Marilee Jones.
CSET survey results: (Darcy) - she informed us of highlights from this survey of educational technology at MIT.
One key finding was that faculty and students would like to use separate systems in a more integrated way.
Usability test results from other institutions: (Nicole)
Nicole is still gathering these. We discussed the CREE report forwarded by MacKenzie about embedding search tools in library portals. <http://www.dlib.org/dlib/october05/awre/10awre.html>
More discussion after we gather more results.
B. Planning for the project, part one:
The subgroup filled the whole group in on the specific plan for studying users in their own environment, beginning with grad students in January, continuing with undergrads in Feb/March.
To do list:
- pick partners, block schedules
- pairs: Nicole/Christine, Millicent/Amy, Tracy/Maggie, Darcy/Stephen
- each pair will look at their schedules: between Jan. 23 and Feb. 10, block out times for interview (2 hr. blocks)
- student's week's worth of time should be completed by Jan. 22
- Nicole will make new email list for this project: userneeds@mit.edu
- Nicole will draft email for volunteers, and will receive responses.
- Tracy will photocopy chapter on how to interview and distribute to the team.
- Nicole will send URL for web-based training course on human subjects. (COUHES) Each of us should complete the 1-hour course.
- Millicent will use TT to schedule a one hour time slot in first two weeks of Jan. for the team and week of Feb. 13 for followup meeting.
- Christine to look into setting up a Flickr site for this study, for volunteers to upload their photos.
- Darcy to recruit a student worker to help test the process for us.
- Subgroup (Tracy, Millicent, Nicole) meeting on Monday to firm up study protocol.
- Nicole will ask Joanne to order Amazon gift certificate rewards.
3. Other items
