Minutes - 2 November 2005

Members present: Duke, Gaskell (minutes), Hennig (chair), Quirion, Skuce

1. SFX update

The group approved Darcy's draft email to all-lib about the article linking page. It will also be highlighted on the homepage in the featured resource. Darcy will add a story about it to the blog.

2. Blog and RSS Update

We looked at two mockups of the homepage with changes to better incorporate the news blog. The group approved the RSS feed link in the footer. Nicole will do additional mockups for the display of news stories at the top of the page.

Nicole and Darcy are working with some of blog editors to add more stories. MacKenzie will be a new editor for the blog and will add stories about Dspace in the press. Nicole will enable her access soon. Nicole will write other stories for DLRG.

Stephen created an article for new Scholarly Communication feed. Nicole will put in test blog. Stephen will run the draft by Carol before making it live. He will also ask her about approaching Hal Abelson about contributing to the blog.

Both ESL and Humnaties staff are interested in exploring new uses for blogs. Nicole talked to Anna and Theresa. They may bring suggestions to WAG in the future. Nicole mentioned that comments could be enabled in future blogs, but we would probably only want to do that if we made them moderated (someone on our staff would approve each comment before it went live). This is because there is no easy way to make it MIT-only on the remote hosting service we use for the blogs. Of course that is additional work for someone, but something to consider if we want to use comments at some point.

Darcy showed the group the ESL wiki. She talked about how it's being used and will keep the group up to date on its progress.

The new Barker and Dewey pages incorporating RSS feed for the spotlight are ready. Darcy and Millicent will let Nicole know when they are made live.

Nicole is working on an RSS feed for the virtual reference site that will be powered by del.icio.us. This will be a test and Nicole will be working with the Humanities staff on this project. WAG talked about using social bookmarking for other applications. Nicole will add this topic to a future agenda. In the meantime, Nicole and Darcy will investigate a possible experiment.

3. Podcasting

Nicole and Rob Wolfe were invited to meet with a few people in IS&T and MITWorld about podcasting. Nicole met with Theresa about the possibility of making the authors@mit events into a podcast that we could submit to the directory of podcasts at MIT (being made by IS&T). We will experiment with the December authors@mit program (since the Nov. program had a problem with the recording). If it goes well, that could be our first in a series of podcasts we could offer of events from the MIT Libraries. We also looked at Stanford's podcast site on iTunes

Next meeting:
