Minutes - 17 August 2005

Members present: Hennig (chair), Duke, Gaskell, Quirion, Skuce (minutes)
Guests: Edwards, Gabridge

1. Barton as an SFX source

Rich has turned this on in test; WAG discussed implications, made some decisions, listed outstanding questions, and determined that several of the identified issues really require "pre-WAG" decision-making. We will refer this to a group comprising Rich, Nina, Beth, Austin, Christine M., Darcy, Jennifer E., Nicole, and Tracy. Nicole will ask Nina to convene. Tracy will forward notes from the April SFX/Verde meeting to interested parties. Once we have a plan of action, WAG will decide on look, placement, and so on.  In the meantime, Nicole will modify the button and its associated text.

2. Revision of "Making Google Scholar Work for You" page

Millicent and Nicole will work on this: http://libraries.mit.edu.libproxy.mit.edu/help/google-scholar/ [Note: completed, and live, August 22]

3. "Linking to articles" page

Nicole, Darcy, and Tracy met earlier in the day. They are working with Rich on a method for getting the open URL to display in the SFX menu (or linked from the menu) with instructions on how to use that as a permanent URL. Until that is ready, the updated page which contains other methods of linking to full text will be made live. Later the open URL method will be added to the page, once it's working. See:

4. News blog

Nicole has made a couple of changes to how we link to the RSS feed from the blog (at the suggestion of Darcy).  This will help users who don't yet know what RSS is to get to the page that explains it.

  • We would like more frequent additions, and we do expect an uptick in September. Darcy will be sending an email to all-lib with a reminder to submit news stories.
  • Darcy has also begun a story on the Full Text Finder, will complete it, and post it as a Featured Resource. [Note: Completed, and live, August 17]
  • Adding features: Nicole will play with some options, on a typical divisional library home page, for making each individual library show its own RSS feeds, and we will discuss at the next meeting.

5. RSS feeds for Aleph

There is a strong desire to get truly current, intelligent "new title" lists generated from Aleph, and RSS is a perfect vehicle. We have a script from another institution that will enable us to implement this, and work needs to be done to make it happen in our environment. Darcy will add this issue to the web-opac priority list.

6.  Future agenda items

  • Staff web: Nicole will speak with Nina once more, and we're looking at fall for movement on this
  • Individual library home pages: tweaks for updating them all at once, and when should the next redesign be?
  • IEEE and SFX
  • RSS feeds from Aleph
  • Barton as an SFX source

Next meeting:

Wednesday, September 7, 2-3:30 pm, Cubespace
