Minutes - 3 August 2005

Members present: Hennig (chair), Duke, Gaskell, Quirion, Skuce (minutes)

Guests: Jennifer Edwards, Tracy Gabridge, and Rich Wenger

1. SFX and Refworks/EndNote

Darcy and Howard have been testing SFX's Refworks and EndNote services. While the export of data from SFX into RefWorks or EndNote works well with journal articles, it doesn't work well with other formats such as conference papers, books, etc. In some cases, the info that is passed into RefWorks or Endnote is not complete enough to enable the user to find the article again. Darcy and Howard agreed that this service was not ready for release at this time, but Rich will send their search results and recommendations to the SFX list.

2. Using OpenURL to Link To Articles

Darcy and Tracy have made a draft page on linking to articles, and will meet with Nicole to try to get the options working. The test version is available at http://libraries.mit.edu/help-test/ linking.html.

We also looked at the Idiot's Guide to implementing OpenURL:
http:// www.openly.com/1cate/ig.html

Darcy will contact the people running Knowledge Updates to give them the link to our page when it's ready.

3. Full Text Finder

Rich and Nicole have been working on making changes to the Full Text Finder, http://libraries.mit.edu/fulltext, in hopes of rolling it out this fall.

Darcy and Tracy have created a "What is a DOI" page already. In some cases, there are issues with going into aggregator content (like ProQuest) via DOI. Millicent will test this out and report back. The "more info...can't find what you are looking for" page is now live, too.

Christine will contact Howard and ask for his help in making a page called "What is a PubMed ID" which will be linked to from the Full Text Finder.

WAG reviewed ideas from the meeting on July 6 where ideas for publicizing the Full Text Finder were brainstormed. Ideas included linking to it from Vera, (new mocked up page) on home page quicklinks between vera and ask us, as tip of the week, rewrite the how to find articles page to incorporate this info under the Search Our Collections heading on the home page, as well as the Search our Collections page under "articles from Journals", in regular quick links menu in footer of Barton and many other page , and on top of ILB Journal Request form.

Millicent will contact Angie and the Instruction Committee to show her the new Full Text Finder, and ask her to start working on incorporating the new information into the Information Navigator.

Nicole will make wording change on the new Vera page-- "if you have an article citation"

Timeline for release: Announce to staff first, let them know of where it will be linked to, and distribute the URL to staff before changing the links on the public web. Millicent will compose a message from WAG to let them know. Staff will have a week to try it out, and Nicole will change links and make it live on Monday August 15.

4. SFX and Google Scholar

Rich walked us through some examples of changes in Google Scholar. Some improvements have been made, but a few issues still remain. The Making Google Scholar Work For You page http:// libraries.mit.edu/help/google-scholar/ will need some edits as a result, including the name of the link to MIT, the screen shot, add a note about the two different links that show up.

-Nicole will update the screen shots.
-Millicent will write a response to the question about the two different types of links.
-Tracy will write a story about Google Scholar for the News Blog at the beginning of the semester.

Millicent asked about making item availability showing up on the brief results screen in Barton, since users often get confused and don't click the "All Items." Perhaps add a note like "Is it on the shelf?" to appear next to the location and call number.

In a future meeting, we'll discuss links between IEEE and SFX, as well as SFX and Barton now that the upgrade has happened.

5. Photo stripe ideas

We will try to recreate the spotlight of staff faces for fall. Millicent, Stephen and Christine will take photos. Other ideas included: Tim the Beaver for Orientation or MIT Libraries week,
Rotch's fun shelf of toys, ideas from the Institute Archives staff, close up of the SFX logo, graphic of the miles of volumes in our collections. Christine will be trained in photo stripes.

6. Future of staff web

Nicole shared the guidelines for the staff web that she and Nina drafted and the group began the discussion of those. This will be continued at a future meeting.

Next meeting:

Wednesday, August 17, 2:00 pm in Cube Space.
