1.
SFX items:
A. The Citation Linker <http://libraries.mit.edu/fulltext>
We discussed when and how to roll it out, what to call it, and more. Here is a list of decisions made:
- We'll call it the SFX Full Text Finder.
- Hide the journal and book tabs for now, use the article tab (without showing the tab).
- Add this sentence to the top:
Enter your citation to find the full text online. For best results, fill in as much information as possible.
- Change the order to this:
1. article title
2. author name
3. journal title
4. dates
.... the rest stays the same
5. put DOI and PMID fields below a line or to the right (set them off somehow)
link to more info pages for each of those:
What is a DOI? (draft page: http://libraries.mit.edu/help/doi.html )
What is a pmid? (PubMed ID - make a page for this)
- Fix the "more info.." page that is currently linked in the SFX menu to say "online resources" instead of journals <http://libraries.mit.edu/about/faqs/sfx-info2.html>.
BEFORE:
Not currently indexed by SFX.
SFX does not have a comprehensive listing of all the journals available from the MIT Libraries. Sometimes, a journal may be available electronically or in print from the Libraries even though SFX has not found it. Therefore, you should try searching Barton and Vera for the journal title. If you are still unable to find the journal, request the article through Interlibrary Borrowing.
CHANGE IT TO THIS:
Can't find what you're looking for?
The MIT Libraries may own it, even though SFX didn't find it. Try searching our catalog, Barton, and Vera (databases & e-journals). If you're still having trouble, Ask Us!
- under the Full Text Finder, also make a link to the above page: Can't find what you're looking for?
Rich and Nicole will draft this when they meet on Aug 2. (we'll discuss at next meeting on Aug. 3)
B. Link to the SFX Full Text Finder from these pages:
- Vera home page
- Home page quick Quick Links, after Vera: SFX Full Text Finder
- Featured resource or service or Tip of the Week
- re-write "how do I find an article?" to include info about it
- Under SEARCH OUR COLLECTIONS
barton, vera, sfx full text finder
- on SEARCH OUR COLLECTIONS, article from journals
- get rid of off-campus link on SOC
- in regular quick links menu in footer of Barton and many other pages
- on top of ILB journal article request form:
(did you check the SFX Full Text Finder to see if we own this?)
Nicole will mock up Vera screen changes to include link to SFX FUll Text Finder
(Move ASK US button to upper right and remove from blue stripe). Remove "new" item.
C. Permanent links to full text articles
We continued the discussion from last week about using the Full Text Finder to help generate permanent links to articles so faculty can link to them from course pages.
First choice: open URL from Full Text Finder, 2nd choice: construct with a DOI, 3rd choice: publisher-specific solutions. (we need to offer all 3 options)
We need to update these pages:
http://libraries.mit.edu/help/linking.html
Tracy has drafted a page explaining DOI:
http://libraries.mit.edu/help/doi.html
We approved it and suggested an addition about adding the proxy string to make these URLs work from off campus. Tracy will draft and email to Nicole for adding to the page.
Tracy and Darcy will meet and next time we'll continue the complete discussion.
Nicole and Ellen will ask Jenny about: making DOI be part of full text services, so it only shows if we have the item, since it's parsable. (They never responded to Tracy's question on the listserv).
Can we show the open URL in every SFX menu as a way for people to link?
Can it not show the unused fields in the URL?
D. SFX & Google Scholar
- save for next time, Rich is working on some answers
- make plan for updating this page: http://libraries.mit.edu/help/google-scholar/
2. News blog and our RSS feeds
We are still waiting on the hostname from IS&T. We will go live soon after that is ready.
3. RSC name change plans: (Library Storage Annex)
We are timing it to happen with the Barton upgrade. Sounds like Barton will be delayed another week, Nicole and Marion are preparing everything so it can happen the following week (when Nicole is on vacation). Nicole will prepare shortcuts for Christine to make live when Barton is upgraded. Marion is getting all the pages ready before then. Redirects will give us time to update the links gradually because they'll point people from old URLs containing RSC to news ones containing "lsa."
4. Other items:
- Nicole is working with Heather on a new web site for giving. Hope to have it ready for the fall semester.
- Nina and Nicole are discussing the future of the staff web and planning to get Web Advisory Group involved. More on this next time.
