Services related to EndNote and RefWorks in SFX menu
In
response to Howard's request that we make these bibliographic software
products a target, the group decided we should turn on EndNote
and RefWorks. We then worked on devising effective language for
the SFX menu. These services will appear under the heading "Citation
export" and will be labelled "Export to RefWorks" and "Export
to EndNote," each with a link reading "More info." That
link will connect to the cheatsheet for each resource that we already
have in Help Yourself. Jennifer will update the wording and add the "more
info" notes; Darcy and Howard will test EndNote and RefWorks
from a few databases; and Nicole and Rich will meet to change the
look of the menu.
2.
NTIS and SFX problem
The SFX response to searches for NTIS publications can be misleading.
A proposed solution was to use a different SFX menu, or turn off
the SFX button, when NTIS is the source. Tracy and Rich both looked
into this, and it cannot be done: it simply isn't technically possible
for us to do anything different for NTIS. Unfortunately the Ask
Us link in the SFX menu is all we can offer at this time.
3.
Creating permanent links to full text articles in our e-resources
We need to update the following pages that explain how to make links
from faculty course pages to articles from our licensed resources,
now that we have the SFX Citation Linker as a possible method for
creating these links:
Linking to Articles Online
Publisher-Specific Solutions
WAG examined the
status of these pages, discussed the issues in general, and looked
at how to move forward. WAG (+SFX subgroup) will work on the short-term
issues regarding the Citation Linker; the SFX-Verde group will work
on long-term issues, such as when and how to roll out the Citation
Linker. Rich will ask the SFX list how to make a phrase like "copy this link" display
in any SFX menu. He'll turn it on in test, and then we'll test it.
Tracy volunteered to draft a page that will promote using the DOI when
available, and she will also incorporate updated info from the current
publisher-specific solutions page. We will set up the openURL generator
in test to show the URL. Darcy will work with Tracy on testing, and
this will be back on our agenda in the near future.
4. SFX and Google Scholar
Millicent and others reported on our test of Google Scholar. Darcy:
inconsistent links popped up. Christine: got dumped into Barton nearly
every time, even though full text was available. General feeling:
it worked better before they scraped our holdings. Millicent and
Christine will send Rich 3 or 4 citations that demonstrate specific
problems. We will continue this topic at our next meeting, once we
have the results of Rich's query.
5. News blog
Nicole
demonstrated the blog to an enthusiastic WAG. The goal is to go
live on July 6, though we're still waiting for the URL to work
(IS has been contacted). The training went well, and roughly a
dozen editors from across the system are ready to go. Darcy and
Nicole will clear out the "test stories," and each editor will
add at least 1 live story to the blog. On our web site, the news
section under "about us" will be updated with a link
to the blog.
RSS feeds: The blog will auto-generate our RSS feeds, both for general
Libraries news, and for specific topic areas. We will publicize our
feeds in several places around MIT and beyond. This will allow our
content to be inserted in other web sites and news-readers.
Nicole (on a team with Pam, Sarah, and Heather) is creating templates
that will become the desktops on public computers in each library,
and these templates will include live RSS feeds from our news blog.
Each unit can customize the number of headlines on their desktop.
This will all be previewed at the next PSMG meeting. We'll follow
up a week or so after going live, and do any tweaking needed.
