Minutes - 5 January 2005

Present: Hennig (chair), Duke, Gaskell, Quirion (minutes), Skuce

1. Google Scholar

We looked at the About Google Scholar pages from Georgia State University, Michigan State, and University of Pennsylvania.

http://ebybox.aresgate.net/dev/scholar/

Millicent will contact the Reference Committee to generate the content for an About Google Scholar page, which WAG can help with.

We also discussed the impact of Google Scholar and Google's Digitization Program. Ideas touched upon:

-the developing a vision of how we present e-resources to the public.  Nicole and Ellen are chairing the group that's working on SFX  upgrade and Verde.  SFX upgrade to be installed as soon as its  available.

-Barton as an SFX source (perhaps as a starting point for finding  Ejournals)

-Database discovery tool

-Ways to promote Google scholar while also pointing people to local  services

-Using other interfaces to search MIT metadata such as WorldCat or  RLG's Red Light Green Light http://www.redlightgreen.com. It's an open database kind of world-- people might not use our tools to search our data. Redlightgreen as a good model for integrating services (get it at MIT) bibliographic tools like endnote, related links

-What is the scope of Google scholar--is everything that's in Vera in Google scholar?

-Are there other sources like Google scholar?  Elsevier has one, also IEEE.

-Draw a chart for our users which shows the universe of what's in Barton, what's in Vera, what's in Google Scholar, in relation to the world of information. (Tracy may have a script for this already). Google Scholar as one tool among many.

-List Google Scholar in Vera, like any other database

-We'll need to respond to the discussion from the all staff meetings going on now and tomorrow

-Google scholar results- multiple ISBNs, hardcover ISBN's are not coming up, getting false no hits when we do own the item (Stephen's MIT press example)

-Are more people at MIT trying to talk to or lobby Google scholar
people for changes (to ISBN search, etc.)

-NPR talk of the nation program about Google http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4229570

-Create a FAQ on Google Scholar

-Relationship w/ open access

Stephen will look at Google documentation to see what they are trying to do to address the appropriate copy issue.

2.Customizing Google Scholar Search

Nicole's been working on a bookmarklet which contains javascript and  will add SFX buttons to a Google Scholar search, which may address part of the appropriate copy problem. The bookmarklet would add SFX buttons to Google Scholar search results, and route users though our SFX menus and proxy server, based on work from University of Alberta.  http://www.ualberta.ca/~pbinkley/gso/   We're thinking about it as a possibility, which we'll discuss after our next meeting and after the all staff meeting.  Nicole's going to ask Rich and Austin for help with
the javascript.

3. New Data Services web site

WAG reviewed the test version of the new Data Services web site.
Millicent will give feedback to Kate.  We're looking at the template for the Data Services web site as a model for other deep subject pages.  We'd like to find a way to add some consistent navigation links to the rest of the site in a navigation bar near the top of the page.  We looked again at  the CSS subject guide templates that Nicole worked on a few months  ago.  We may try to incorporate the top tab navigation or using a bread crumb (higher level), back to Help Yourself > Subject Guides at the top of the page. Nicole will mock up secondary nav bar between header and body, as well as above the header, to add to the template for subject pages, which can be added to the data services site.

4. SFX Changes

Nicole showed us screen shots of the new wording for SFX menus that will let users know if resources do not link directly to an item, and display those results below sources that do link directly to the article, which will require work from STS staff.  These changes will be made live soon.

5.  Changes to Barton quick search

When Barton is down for testing or out of service, the search box on  the home page was bringing up error messages for users and not going  to the error page for Barton down time. Nicole's made other versions
of the home page that can be used when Barton is down or in test mode.

6. IAP events related photo stripe

Darcy's working on a photo stripe that will highlight IAP activities. We may need to have another contest for the photo stripe in the spring, and we'll probably repeat the faces spotlight again this spring.

Future agenda items:

-Follow up on Google Scholar from all staff meeting
-Spotlight items
-Demo of nav bar for subject guides
-Macromedia contribute
-Blogs

Next meeting:

Wednesday, January 19, 2-3:30pm, CubeSpace
