1. Updates on various new pages

  • new "giving" pages: coming soon
  • scholarly communication pages: coming soon
  • preservation services: converting current staff page to a public version

2. Follow-ups from last meeting

  • SFX menu changes - changing wording to make options more clear
  • RSS feeds for new books - Austin will start looking at the possibility of implementing this code used at Royal Holloway
  • print reserves form - almost ready to go live
  • DSpace theses - Christine is working on details for getting theses into DSpace, including links in Barton, a help page, etc.

3. Internet Librarian conference updates

Nicole attended the Internet Librarian conference last month and went to some interesting sessions which she summarized for the group:

  • PEW/Internet: interesting information about how people use the internet and other electronic tools/resources
  • overview of usability research
  • 30 search tips in 30 minutes - look at other search types in Google Labs, Yahoo's advanced search is getting very good
  • content management systems
  • IM (Instant Messaging) - libs are going away from live web services and moving to chat services; younger populations are moving from email to chat and phone
  • faceted metadata and OPACs
  • university blogs - UMinn library is sponsoring blogs, no censorship
  • open source library automation systems; current ones are small-scale, but successful; one large-scale system is in the works for 248 libraries in Georgia

4. New template for Data Services web site (and other future sites)

Nicole and Kate McNeill-Harman showed the new data services pages they have been working on, which uses a new template Nicole has been developing. WAG approved the new template for Data Services and Kate hopes to have this live in January. This template will also be used as one of the new templates for subject guides.
