1. Usability
test results
Due
to timing constraints, we ended up testing only 6 of the 10 people
we wanted to test. We decided this was enough for now, since
we got valuable data. We will test a few more people after the
page is coded and clickable.
All
but one of the students tested liked the new page very much and
succesfully used it to find information. We did notice some things
that need tweaking. See our written results for details.
Action items:
- Nicole
will contact Hecht Designs with any changes needed.
- Darcy will run the test on her mom, just to get the impressions
of one more totally "new" user.
- At our next meeting we will brainstorm more ideas related to the
two biggest changes we want to make (name of the second drop-down
menu, and the possible re-naming of two top-level categories)
- At our next meeting we will discuss ideas for a brown bag lunch
for staff to discuss how to use the new home page to market our services
more effectively.
2. Hiding
email addresses to thwart spammers
It
was agreed that we would update our Staff Directory pages, which
list the email address of every staff member, to remove the "@mit.edu"
from each user name and just show it at the top of the column. This
would make it a bit less easy for spam-bots to harvest email
addresses from those pages.
3. Preparing
Tip of the Week, Feature Service, Hot Topics
Darcy made templates for these new pages and will contact appropriate
web authors on our staff to write content for these in time for the
release of the new home page. We'll review them at a future meeting.
