1. Designer
for Home Page
We
have an RFP almost ready to go and a short list of designers we'd
like to invite to bid on the new home page. Nicole will send out
the RFP's by the end of the week.
2. "Test Vera"
with Serials Solutions Imported Titles
Nicole
imported the Serials Solutions data into test Vera (with help from
Tracy on the coverage dates). This import increased the size of test
Vera from about 5000 titles to about 18000 titles.
Most
packages worked, except for Factiva and Ethnic Newswatch. Ethnic
Newswatch
is inconsistent, and Factiva goes to the main search screen.
Darcy will look
into creating a title note and
intermediate screen explaining how to find specific titles in
Factiva. Nicole will also follow up with Serials Solutions to see
if they
can fix
the
problems
from
their
side.
The
import also includes problems with foreign language characters;
Nicole will ask Serials Solutions about that as well. Titles with
periods in them must be searched with the periods.
We
didn't like the "recommended database" language for listing packages
in a subject search of journals. The databases contain additional
titles, but are not necessarily "recommended" for a particular search.
We changed the text to "full-text aggregated databases".
We
still need to discuss workflow issues, and decide in January whether
we'd like to recommend this import.
3. New Subject
Guides
Nicole's
been looking at examples of other web pages and reading about sophisticated
style sheet design.
4. Content Management
Systems
Carl
and Nicole have been working on this. Macromedia Contribute may
be an option for web authoring. They looked at the University of
Minnesota's LibData project.
5. Metadata
Unit Web Site
Nicole
met with Robert Wolfe and showed him how we use Dreamweaver on
our site. They're still working on the look and feel of the metadata
site, but
it should be done in January. Once it's created, Robert will be
responsible for updating it.
6.
Blogs
Nicole
is investigating the possibility of using a blog in Moveable Type
to keep track of library news briefs. This would make it easier
for
additional
people to add news to the Libraries' site. There's a possibility
that each library would also be able to create news blogs, or that
library staff would be able to use blogs on the staff web. Nicole
will also investigate the blogs that are available to the MIT
community.
7. SFX
We
will look at the Full Text Finder again in January, especially
if the "new, improved" version is out. We will also look at Barton
as a source and DSpace as a target. Darcy and Stephen will brainstorm
about using Barton as a source.
