Minutes - 6 November 2003

Hennig (chair), Duke, Edelman, Quirion (minutes), Skuce

1. Subject Guides

The group discussed mockups of new subject guide templates that Nicole has been working on. Nicole also shared a quick analysis of the depth and scope of subject pages. Nicole will continue to work on the mockups, and look at pages which include tables. The templates will eventually include options for guides with deep content/hierarchy, directories, long pages, or guides that are entry pages to other content. WAG would like to see templates that are similar to one another in look and feel that also fit in with the rest of the web site, and maybe more white space in the templates. The need to try to improve the sidebar of guides in the old template was also discussed. WAG also discussed subject pages at other universities that Graham from CMG sent to us.

2. Macromedia Contribute

Nicole showed a brief demo of Contribute. Features include ease of editing pages, ability to go back to previous versions of pages, and no need for FTP. Contribute could present a solution for making small edits or posting minutes for infrequent web authors. There are options to customize user permissions. Contribute doesn't allow access to page HTML to make changes for more advanced users.

Contribute would work well in our environment because it works with existing Dreamweaver templates. It's designed so that more advanced users could use Dreamweaver and beginning or infrequent web editors could use Contribute. Nicole will continue to investigate this product.

3. Updates

  • PDA proposal: Erja and Nicole submitted a technology project proposal for exploring PDA services that the libraries might offer. These could include generating new book lists in PDA format, allowing users to download Barton search results to PDA's, etc. This proposal is on the technology project list.
  • Web Site for Metadata Unit: Nicole has been working with Rob Wolfe to create a site to promote the Metadata unit.
  • Importing BELL into Vera: The next serials solutions update will have coverage formatted as we want, Nicole will import it into test Vera so we can compare the data again
  • Home page: Some comments have come from staff after the brown bag lunch. Nicole will write an RFP and get together short list of designers to work with
