Minutes - 17 September 2003

Present: Hennig, Edelman (minutes), Duke, Quirion, Skuce

1. Vera interface changes

We made the changes and are still welcoming feedback.

2. Importing package titles into Vera

We're working on getting the URLs to work in the SFX import. Nicole is working with Rich to get the script we got from Cal State to work the way we expect it to work.

We're still figuring out the differences in coverage between BELL and SFX. They update their data on different schedules. Perhaps we could import the data from BELL, rather than SFX, into Vera? Can BELL send us files that we could import into Vera? Nicole will talk to Sarah who is communicating with Serials Solutions and Jennifer Edwards who is communicating with SFX about this issue.

3. Redesigning our home page

We are going to host a brown bag lunch to discuss our ideas for a new home page and get staff input on our proposed design. We will provide dessert. We will try to get 14E-304 on either Oct. 8 or Oct. 10, from 12-1. Nicole will create a page for the 2003-2004 home page redesign process, and include our goals and the wire-frame design (restricted to all-lib).

The group brainstormed a list of goals and practical ideas for why we want to change our home page and what we want to achieve. We'll share this with staff at the brown bag lunch and get more ideas and input. This will guide our work with a designer. Nicole will add pages to our staff web site documenting our goals and the process.

4. Content Management Systems

Nicole and Carl created a timeline. They're researching what other people have done and have looked at several open source software packages. Many groups in the area are building their own content management systems from scratch. Nicole and Carl made a list of features that we would require in any content management system that we would adopt. We would probably start small and get some experience with content management before we expand it.

5. New Sites

Sometime this semester we will be working with Archives on their new Records Management site and the Metadata Unit on a new site to promote its services.

Next meeting:

Wed., Oct. 1, 2-3:30, Barker Conference Room
