Scenarios for a single e-journal list
We
discussed how to improve the situation where our users need to
check both BELL and Vera to find all e-journals. We looked at several
different scenarios worked out in advance by Ellen and Nicole. The
one that looks most feasible is to import aggregator titles (titles
currently in the BELL lists) from the SFX Knowledgebase into Vera
on a monthly
basis. This would allow us to cancel the BELL
lists from Serials Solutions.
We
decided to test this on a copy of Vera on a test server. To deal
with the fact that there is no easy way to apply our Vera subjects
to those titles, we are experimenting with creating
or modifying
package-level
records
(or dummy records) to get them
to appear
at the top of
appropriate
subject
lists in Vera. These records would tell people to check those
packages for more titles. After the test is set up, we'll
get feedback from subject selectors and other staff.
2.
BELL: add search feature now? or later? or not at all?
Serials
Solutions has sent instructions for adding a search feature to
their lists (BELL). We decided to implement this in a test directory
and send it
out
for comments
to
more
staff.
This
could
be an easy short-term improvement. We will include a note for off-campus
users about going in via Vera, put the search box at top of every
page, and make the search page be the first page that comes up.
3.
FullText Finder: where does this fit into our picture for the short
term?
We
decided we can't make it public until 4th quarter fix release from
ExLibris - there are just too many problems with it.
4.
Other items
Nicole
will talk to Sarah Wenzel about improvements she made with Serials
Solutions (it won't work from off-campus). We
should ask SFX if they can make Lexis-Nexis & similar packages
go to title level as well.
Nicole work with Ellen to update Vera documentation on the staff
web.
