1. Usability testing for Archives site
Stephen
met with Nora and Lois from the Archives to discuss the upcoming usability
tests of the new Archives site. They provided Stephen with a rough
list of questions - Stephen and Darcy will refine and repackage the
questions into a draft of the test. There will be four general questions
for all users and six more specific questions geared towards each
specific user group. The Archives search engine will not be tested
in this first round of tests - the users will be prompted to browse
for information only.
2. Guidelines from Jakob Nielsen's book on homepage usability
The
group reviewed the guidelines outlined in Jakob Nielsen's book, Homepage
Usability, and applied them to the MIT Libraries homepage to see
how well our site held up. Generally our site fared quite well, but
we did find a number of shortcomings (some already known, others not)
which we will work towards correcting.
3. New GIS site
Sarah
Williams, the GIS specialist, met with the group to discuss the look
and feel and navigation of the new GIS site she is creating. Sarah
demoed some approaches to the main navigation bar she had created
and the group helped resolve some navigation issues. Sarah will continue
to work on the site and consult with WAG members.
