meebo

Instant messaging anywhere

You can place a meebo widget, which is the entry point for a meebo "room," on any web page. Using your widget, students visiting your page on any computer can ask you questions in real time or, if you're off-line, can leave you messages. You can reply from the same page.

1. To create the room: Get Meebo

  • Give your widget a short, welcoming name, like "chat with Marion."
  • Choose a widget size. "Regular" (190 x 275 px) is a good width for the sidebar of a Guide page.
  • Choose a color theme.
  • You'll see an image of your widget changing on the right side of the web page as you make your choices - so you can:
    • change the name of the widget or choose a wider size if the name is cut off
    • see how different color themes look

2. Choose "next," and you'll be prompted to

  • create a new meebo ID or
  • log on with your current ID. (You can create multiple meebo widgets for the same ID.)

3. Choose "next," and you'll find the code to imbed in a web page to make the widget appear.

4. Copy that code, and paste it where you want it in your web page source code. For example:

You'll see a "plugin" symbol, rather than your actual widget, in Dreamweaver. Don't be worried - view the page in a browser and the widget will appear.

5. Go to meebo.com and log on to your account - and your widget will show that you are online.

(send me a message! If I'm not here when you visit, I'll find your message the next time I visit this page.)

Here's an example of a meebo widget used on a guides page.
