MIT Libraries

MIT Libraries Undergraduate User Group

Undergraduate User Group minutes: 3/01/01

Attendees: Davis-Millis, dePopolo, Gabridge, Sherratt and as a guest, Sarah Shreeves

1. Discussion with Sarah Shreeves about publicizing 3rd Barton to undergraduates

Sarah reviewed the 3rd Barton communication plan and asked for the Undergrad UG committee's input about additional ideas, timing, etc. The group came up with a variety of ideas including:

- Post flyers in the dorms and living groups in both July and September
- Include training scheduled, tip sheets at all large group gatherings
- Include Reg Day as an opportunity to reach upperclassmen
- Add the personal login registration process to the message we want to   communicate to our users
- Have a flip-the-switch event (in the libraries, could be burial service for 2nd   Barton :-)
- Email the announcement to undergrads
- Tent cards in on library table and in the dining halls
- Slide show projection in the infinite corridor
- Blurb on MIT cable
- An advertisement at the LSC movies
- Necco wafers with a customized message (I {heart} Barton)

2. Orientation
Margaret reviewed the latest developments regarding Orientation. We briefly discussed the Campus Preview event for prospective students and library messages in the materials that prospective students see.

3. Interviews: Questions? Preparation for meeting with ugrads on FCLS. Other interviews?
We agreed that it would be a good idea to meet with both of the student representatives of the Faculty Committee on the Libraries. Perhaps it could be set up like an exit interview as they finish their terms.

4. Message to all-lib (ps-lib) asking for FAQ's for the Web page - do we want to do this?
We decided that we don't want to send out a message to ps-lib/all-lib to solicit these questions because it is likely that there will be an extremely low response rate. Instead, Nina will send FAQ ideas from the Dig Ref initiative (and Margaret will nag Nina about this :-).

****NEXT MEETING****
Thursday April 4th, 11:30-12:30
Several people are unavailable for the 3/15 meeting - it is now cancelled.
