MIT Libraries Undergraduate
User Group
UUG MINUTES, Meeting
of 12/6/01
Present: Margaret
dePopolo, Tracy Gabridge, Sarah Wenzel, Sarah Williams
1. T-shirts!
Margaret distributed
t-shirts for participating in Family Weekend. She still has a few for
the rest of the folks who took part.
2. Announcements
Margaret shared the committee self-review checklist created by PSMG.
Around June we will be expected to conduct this self-review.
3. Updates
- Margaret shared
news of the Graduate Student User Group that was provided by Steve Gass
at the PSMG meeting. Their accomplishments as well as their plans were
discussed as food for thought for the Undergrad group.
- The undergraduate
web page - Tracy shared an early analysis of the old draft undergrad
web page with the group. The idea is to see what content from that page
could be incorporated into the new Libraries' web site. A couple of
ideas were discussed. Tracy, Sarah Wenzel and Sarah Williams will work
on this further, with a meeting with Nicole as the next step.
- FCLS library subcommittees
- Margaret shared an update about the Faculty Committee and their plan
to gain consensus for a new Engineering and Science Library. Margaret
is on a subcommittee to explore the importance of libraries as a physical
space for student life. Steve Gass is on a subcommittee to explore why
physical libraries are necessary even while digital materials are increasingly
available. The purpose of this latter subcommittee is to address a widely
held opinion among faculty that physical libraries become less important
as more digital materials are available.
4. New Business
- Reg Day 2002 -
We agreed that the UUG will once again participate in this event.
- Student Member
for UUG - Discussion took place about the possibility of including a
student member on the UUG. All agreed that it would be a good idea and
that we would need to use a student's time very carefully, keeping in
mind their heavy academic commitments. Where we should pursue such a
student was the topic of further discussion. One possibility is to use
a student worker. Another possibility would be to ask the Undergraduate
Association for a liaison. Both methods have pros and cons. We need
to solidify what we want to get out of a student's participation and
what is in it for the student. Discussion will continue at a later date.
Margaret will share with us a document about student library advisory
committees.
5. Frequency
of Meetings
We agreed that we
would have 1 progress/update meeting per month, and 1 working meeting
per month where subgroups can get together to work on current projects.
6. UUG Web page
(for staff)
The group brainstormed
some ideas for such a list.
Next meeting: Thursday,
December 20th, 9:30.
