User Interface Group
February 22, 2007
Present: Darcy Duke, Lisa Harrington (minutes), Nicole Hennig (chair), Bonnie Parks
1. Update on video tutorials from Darcy
Darcy talked about the video tutorials task force, their charge and what they've been working on. Patty Durisin Barbera has been consulting for the MIT Libraries as a member of the group. The task force is reporting back to Steve on March 1st with documentation on creating web tutorials. The plan is to begin with "core tutorials".
UIG brainstormed a list of ideas for web tutorials that we could then submit to the task force. Nicole showed us some video and audio files embedded within a webpage. UIG discussed the idea of making the videocasts "story oriented" and narrative in nature rather than "tool oriented".
2. Barton priorities list
Darcy showed us the web OPAC list she has re-created in the ESL wiki: http://www.socialtext.net/opac/index.cgi?opac_to_dos
She's been working on a system to prioritize each of the tasks and she gave UIG a little tour of her organization of the list.
Darcy also announced the Barton Account password fix which resets the password for users if they forget it. The user fills out a simple form and it emails them a new password.
3. Update regarding wikis from Nicole
Confluence will be supported by MIT and IS&T will likely be rolling it out sometime before summer. These wikis will only be for the use of staff pages not public pages for the Libraries. It may be possible to migrate from prior wiki software to Confluence. Quickstarts may also be offered.
4. Betas and graduates of betas
http://libstaff.mit.edu/uig/betas.html
The group discussed what qualifies something to be a beta and what criteria need to be in place before the beta can be considered a gradutate of beta. We came up with a list of the criteria as well as a list of what defines a beta.
5. Metalib Task Force about the new Vera interface (using metalib and the x-server)
Nicole showed the group a basic mockup of the new interface and a sample of the secondary pages including a small tour of what the options are. The group commented and offered feedback and suggestions.
