1. Update on Barton priority ranking from December
See the Barton New Features and Fixes "to do" list. The "to do next" list is a result of the 10 December 2006 discussion.
2. Barton as an SFX source
Here are the decisions that we made:
- We agreed that we want to hide the URL in Barton records and only show the SFX button. The button will appear conditionally, only on records that appear in the SFX Knowledgebase. There is a script being developed that will add items with URLs in Barton to our SFX Knowledgebase that were not already in it.
- We agreed that the button should appear in both brief and full records, but not display on holdings screens.
- We agreed that we should bypass the SFX menu and link directly to the full text if there is only one target source. This would apply to all SFX sources including Barton, Google Scholar, etc.
Timing: As soon as all the changes and updates can be made, and staff updated about what it will mean, we'll turn it on without waiting for the MARCit load to go live.
3. Priority setting
Nicole distributed a list "other ideas for ranking." We discussed the items on the list and it was decided that we will spend part of our next meeting prioritizing.
Nicole updated our Projects page: This page outlines criteria for prioritizing our every day work.
Nicole added a "Resources" page to our site.
4. Updates
Maggie discussed the ProQuest full-text linking service that bypasses SFX.
Background: on 17 Dec. 2006, Millicent Gaskill received an email from ProQuest regarding a new service that is like SFX. Millicent was advised that unless told otherwise, ProQuest would automatically turn on the service. Millicent, Ellen Duranceau and Dewey librarians decided against turning it on. After consideration of the possibilities with SFX, a decision will eventually be made with respect to the ProQuest product. We didn't have time to discuss this question fully yet and Maggie will gather more information for a discussion next time. We'll discuss the general question of products that have full-text linking of their own that is similar to what SFX does and whether it should be enabled or not (in addition to SFX) when there is a choice.
Next Meeting: 25 January 2007, 3-4:30, CubeSpace
