Technology Project Leadership
Each project has a sponsor. The sponsor should be one individual who
cares enough about the project to provide oversight for the project
as a whole. It is the responsibility of the sponsor to keep the project
on track, and to report on its progress on a regular basis. The sponsor
is the ultimate "owner" of the project, and will be STS's
key contact.
Each project also requires a project manager: someone responsible for
developing a project plan and a timeline, and for detailed management
of the steps outlined in the plan. The sponsor may serve as the project
manager, but not necessarily: for example, the sponsor may ask the key
STS participant to manage the project, or may designate another member
of the team. It is up to the sponsor to determine how formal and detailed
a plan each project requires, but at the very least the plan should
describe the project's goals and the steps involved. In general, the
more complex the project, the more detailed a plan you will want. Agreeing
upon the plan for the project should be among each team's first tasks.
Also, it is important that each project's timeline take into account
both the importance of the project and the other responsibilities of
those involved in the project.
To address the needs of both STS and Library Council to be kept informed
on our projects, each sponsor will write a brief summary of their project's
progress twice a year (timed to coincide with Council's two rounds of
prioritization.) The project plan and timeline should be submitted with
the first such summary; any changes may be included in subsequent reports.
