Please follow this procedure when you have a serious problem with Barton (including web OPAC and staff clients).

General libraries staff | Hayden staff | Evenings, weekends & holidays | When the problem's fixed

General Libraries Staff:

  • SPEAK WITH THE SUPERVISOR IN CHARGE OF YOUR UNIT to determine whether the problem requires immediate attention.
  • CHECK WITH A LOCAL CIRCULATION DESK to determine whether the problem is affecting other units:
    • BRANCH LIBRARIES: Report problems to your divisional library circulation desk.
    • DIVISIONAL LIBRARIES: Report problems to Hayden circulation at 3-5672, and stand by to pass information back to branch libraries.
    • SUPERVISORS IN 14E-210 AND IN OTHER OFFICES WITH NO CIRCULATION DESK: Call Hayden circulation at 3-5672 to report a problem and see whether the problem is affecting other units.
  • DO NOT PHONE THE SYSTEMS OFFICE FIRST - leave that task to Hayden!
  • IF HAYDEN REPORTS THAT ONLY YOUR UNIT IS HAVING DIFFICULTY:

Call 3-1617 to reach anyone who may be working in the Systems Office. If you are unable to reach anyone, leave a message and include your name, phone number and time. If staff are not available and you leave a message, feel free to call again if your call has not been returned after a few hours.

Hayden Staff only:

IF CALLS TO HAYDEN INDICATE UNITS ARE HAVING PROBLEMS:

  • Call 3-DOWN (3-3696) to see if MIT is experiencing network problems.
  • Then call 3-1617 to reach anyone working in the Systems office, informing Systems of Barton problems and/or any campus network problems.
  • Report back to the circulation desks of divisional libraries and to 14E-210 any information you obtain about the status of the system.
    • Divisional libraries are responsible for passing this information on to their branches.
  • Evening/weekend/holiday problems: Systems staff need to know as soon as possible about problems with Barton and have asked to be called any time of day. If no one answers the phone in Systems, Hayden staff should call :
  1. Christine Moulen at home, (781) 893-6829. (Please note: despite the 781 area code, this is a local call; simply dial 9 for the outside line and then the number, without dialing 1 for long distance.) If Hayden staff does not speak with Christine, they should leave a message and then call:
  2. Nina Davis-Millis at home, 5-9608. They should leave a message if no one's available, and then
  3. send email to fix-lib@mit.edu.

Night, evening, weekend or holiday problems:

  • Check with your supervisor and the local circulation desk (see above).

When the problem's fixed:

  1. Systems will call the Hayden circulation desk at 3-5672.
  2. Hayden will call 14E-210 and circulation desks at Barker, Dewey, and Rotch to spread the word
  3. Each of these desks will notify their branches and processing offices.
