Date: 11-23-2005
Attending: Ellen Duranceau, Nicole Hennig, Kim Maxwell, Rebecca Lubas,
Beth Siers, Millicent Gaskell, Rich Wenger (minutes)
1. Recap of DLG-TSAC meeting
Nicole and Ellen reported that the meeting was generally positive. The
gave approval for us to proceed with the
User Needs Assessment, and to continue under the assumption that we will
implement Verde in 2006. They want
us to meet with them again in a few months to asses progress and future
goals.
2. In light of DLG/TSAC's assent, the sfx-verde group will continue its
work with Ellen and Nicole as co-chairs. We agreed
that we need to continue educating others that we are proposing incremental
steps, not a one-time conversion to web 2.0.
Ellen pointed out that there are many Library staff who are not aware
of the breadth and depth of the work we've been doing.
A version of the DLG/TSAC presentation will be delivered at the all-staff
meetings in January 2006, and we hope this will
provide wider visibility to our efforts.
3. Reconfiguration for the next 3 months
- it was noted that our group's name no longer reflects the scope of our
work.
- in the coming months our emphasis will shift to the work of 3
subgroups:
1. User Needs Assessment - Nicole (facilitator), Tracy, and Millicent
2. Verde - Ellen (facilitator) and Kim
3. SFX operations - Beth, Rich (facilitator) and Jennifer
Rebecca will stay on the big group (but no subgroup) for the foreseeable
future and Jennifer will participate in the SFX operations subgroup.
Each subgroup will schedule their own meetings. The entire group will
endeavor to meet once per month for approx.
1 hour. The next meeting of the full group is scheduled for Jan. 13, 2006
from 10:00 am - 11:00 am.
4. User needs assessment
Nicole spoke with David Lindahl at U. of Rochester about their recent
user needs assessment work. They have an anthropologist on staff and are
using many interesting techniques, including "cultural probes"
as ways to learn about the information seeking behavior of their community.
Nicole will keep in touch with him about opportunities to collaborate
on this work.
As for surveys, Steve and MacKenzie are taking with Academic Computing
and IS&T about ways to collaborate with us.
Tracy and Nicole have begun sketching an outline of ways to proceed.
5. Metasearch brown bag meeting:
MacKenzie would like us to carefully and fully evaluate the need for a
metasearch tool for the MIT community. She has
requested an open meeting to discuss metasearch alternatives. William
Reilly, Larry Stone, and Stefano Mazzocchi will
be there to discuss a range of technologies that may be useful. Nicole
will chair the meeting and both she and I will take notes
which will become the minutes of the meeting. Scheduled for Nov.
29 from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm.
6. Lippencott Library web site at U. Penn.
Millicent demo'd the mock-up of the new web site at Lippencott Library
because it offers faceted browse and some other
features we've been considering.. The main page is very
open and uncomplicated with lots of white space centered around
a search box. Behind the search box is a very fast home-grown system for
searching their own site. Millicent will get
contact information for their technical staff. Rich will follow up
to find out what tools and components they are using.
7. Staff training topics:
Nicole proposed three topics for staff training: RSS, social bookmarking,
and faceted browsing. It was suggested that we
consider including these in the all-staff meetings.
8. NEASIST meeting (Buy, Hack, or Build) & NELINET meeting (name??)
Both meetings were quite useful, supported the conclusions our group presented
at DLG/TSAC, and inspired ideas for our future consideration.
