Minutes: SFX-Verde Group : MIT Libraries

5/16/2005

[conference call with Tami from ExLibris will be rescheduled - Tami was out
sick ]

1) report from piggybacking group:

what is the piggybacking question?
- single record for print and electronic vs. separate records in the OPAC
- separate records is easier when loading records from vendors

- go with MarcIt product (includes SFX numbers)
- not load an entire record, but just enough info to add e-info to print
holdings
- matching on OCLC number
- so that means we can keep single (i.e. piggybacked) records
- we will also load e-only records separately when we have no print holdings

- but when we "stop adding URLs" to OPAC records, we need to make sure to import
info from SFX Knowledgebase, which will in turn cause SFX button to appear in
OPAC

2) what did we learn from the discussion with Jenny? 30 minutes
key points

what happens in which versions (SFX, Metalib, Barton)

(see summary doc from Ellen)
A. discussion of versions:
Verde v.2 - early 2006 (we need to wait for this)
SFX v.3 - we're already set
Metalib - we need 3.13 version (beginning of June 2005), better 3.14 (end of
2005)
Aleph - our plan is to go to v. 18 next spring - 2006 (better integration
with Verde than in v. 17)

- we believe that the earliest that all the versions would be in place that we
want to use would be summer of 2006 (but we made not need to wait for Aleph
18)

B. X server - fully customized interface? CDL Roy Tennant - let's ask them if
they would be willing to share their interface.

C. Verde KB is "seeded" by SFX KB. Metalib has items in it that are NOT in SFX
(databases) - so how do those get into Verde? Grand plan is everything in one
KB, but maybe that's further into the future?

So we need to ask how & when Metalib records get into Verde.

D. They want to hear back from us as to what Verde data to show where (on which
displays in SFX and Metalib and Aleph). We need to prepare lists of what we
want end users to see. We'll put this on a near future agenda.

E. ej's in SFX a-z vs. Metalib lists: personalization features are available,
not in SFX
added search options for ej's in Metalib, not in SFX

look at Colorado State U. for a site that's using Metalib for ej's

F. subject categories:
ej's by subject? (automatically done in new SFX?)
be sure to look at subject categories in SFX to see if we like them
enough to use

3) redlight green demo:
looked at interface
discussed various interfaces that talk to our data, etc.
Nicole will send out article by D. Chudnov.

Next meeting: Tues. May 24th 2 pm
