SFX Verde minutes, 4/4/2005
Attendees: Ellen Duranceau, Beth Siers, Rich Wenger, Jennifer Edwards,
Nicole Hennig, Millicent Gaskell, Tracy Gabridge (minutes)
1. quick reports from last meeting
- Google Scholar direct linking report to MacKenzie & contract issues
(Ellen)
The group needs some clarification from MacKenzie about points in her
email. What is most important to us is that users be able to see aggregator
content when appropriate rather than being led to believe that we don't
subscribe to something. Nicole and Ellen will bring this back to MacKenzie
for further clarification.
- communication to all-lib (Nicole)
an email was sent to all-lib recently.
- report back from SFX testing subgroup (Tracy)
SFX testing is underway. Rich, Jennifer, Nicole and Tracy have a test
plan and expect to make progress on the testing by 4/11/2005.
- Verde testing (Kim and Ellen)
Verde testing is also underway. More to come at future meetings.
- answer from ExLibris about databases via SFX menu (Ellen)
It was confirmed that a database doesn't have to be in the SFX knowledgebase
to display. It can be in the Verde knowledgebase only.
2. group process check-in (Ellen)
We discussed that the team needed more time for discussion, deep brainstorming
and for the big picture. It was proposed that we would add one meeting
per month, also on Mondays at the same time. The group agreed that we
would meet on 4/11 (Later note: instead we have a longer meeting scheduled
for 4/25). Nicole will adjust Tech Time with new and/or extended meetings.
3. Barton as an SFX source (Nicole)
The group brainstormed questions and issues regarding turning SFX on
within Barton:
- when to show the button? (journals, books, all? items with URLs) (conditional)
- if it is conditional, what would we be missing? (books that we have
in print and electronic- Books24x7) (aggregator titles that we have in
print)
- idea: get list from SFX of isbns/issn's that we have turned on and load
it into Barton and show open URLs
- we need to know what the decision is about piggybacking
- where to show the button?
- brief display, full record, holdings screens : issues for each screen
- what should the button say/look like?
- should the 856 URLs show? or the open URL? or just the sfx menu?
- free things - lots of things that are NOT in the SFX KB (gov docs, databases,
etc.) (can the 856 urls get passed to the sfx menu?)
- no endless loop: menu taking you back to Barton
- no link to ILB (because we already own it)
- should menu should open a new window? or when should it? all other sources
open in a new window (usability study?)
Rich will run a report in SFX for all ISSNs and ISBNs we have turned on
in SFX and Beth will run it against ALEPH to understand the magnitude
of items that will need something to trigger the SFX button to appear.
Beth believes that it is possible to run a process to create an SFX URL
within the Barton record that can be used to trigger the appearance of
the button.
Beth, Tracy, Rich and Millicent will meet separately to come up with a
set of recommendations for turning on Barton as an SFX source. The group
will report out at the 4/25 meeting. Millicent will schedule the meeting.
4. brainstorm testing new functionality of SFX v.3
deferred to the next meeting
5. DDT demo & discussion (Tracy)
Tracy, with the help of several others, gave a brief overview of the
resource discovery recommendations from last year's Resource Discovery
and Metasearch Analysis Group.
6. summing up and items for next time (Ellen)
Next meeting:
- Demo of Metalib (Ellen to set this up)
- Brainstorming of new SFX v.3 features
------------------
parking lot for future items:
- continue brainstorming criteria and begin prioritization
- RedLightGreen demo - Nicole
- more visual diagrams of possible scenarios
- Tracy will demo McGill's approach to listing e-resources in Aleph
- review and update the options grid (Ellen and Nicole)
