March 21, 2005 - Minutes
The SFX/Verde Group met on Monday 3/21/2005 at 10:00 in the CubeSpace
Conference Room.
Present: Ellen Duranceau, Jennifer Edwards, Tracy Gabridge, Millicent
Gaskell, Nicole Hennig, Graham Howard, Kim Maxwell (minutes), Beth Siers,
Rich Wenger
Version 3 SFX Demo
- There is a new "out of the box" look for the end user (public)
SFX menu. Nicole and Rich are trying to put our old look and feel into
the new structure. This will allow us to cut over to version 3 ASAP so
we aren't continuing to maintain two parallel systems; then we can go
back and look at all the new options a little more thoroughly.
- We looked at the A-Z list, which Rich has *just* started looking at.
Need to look at how much we can customize (e.g., put broken icon and holdings
on main list rather than under the i in a circle icon)
- Citation Linker: now searching by journal title offers "contains"
and "begins with" rather than just an exact match (which is
all we have in version 2 of SFX). It would be great to have a conference
proceedings tab -- can we? We should look into this.
- Testing of version 3: what do we need to test before we cut over to
version 3? We made long lists, which I have transcribed at the end of
the minutes.
Direct Linking
The group discussed the pros and cons of direct linking. The group had
some reservations, and decided that Ellen and Nicole would draft a message
to MacKenzie explaining them. (Note: that message was sent on 3/28/05).
Verde
The group reviewed and clarified the options in the grid; Ellen will update
the grid to reflect our discussions. We also came up with additional questions
for Jenny Walker at Ex Libris, which Ellen will communicate to Jenny.
(Note, Ellen did and Jenny has responded and Ellen has sent Jenny's response
to the group).
Our big realization of the morning is that we are trying to answer the
following question:
"What is our vision for the end user and staff interface experience?"
The Lists:
Version 3 upgrade
- ILB Form rule
- Display logic for all rules in menu working, targets moved properly,
activation, institutes
- contact institutions with problems and follow up
- DOI link should result in full text
- Lincoln should these their stuff
- agree on menu choices - Nicole and Rich
- links about why not going to Full Text --> recent notes to help users
with more info
- sort order
- test selective proxying
- text from on-campus
Rich, Nicole, Tracy, and Jennifer will meet to discuss who to divide
up these elements.
Barton with SFX
- button open in new window?
- what is happening when says have/don't have at same time?
- hide link to Barton if from Barton
- find notes from last fall for needed changes (e.g., scripts to pull
URLs into SFX menu for things not in KB)
- button appear conditionally or all the time (e.g., only if URL)
- what should button look like in Barton and where to appear (e.g., use
a text link? replace Barton holdings display with SFX button and force
users to look there for everything?) For all resources or non-print only?
