Charge: SFX-Verde Group: MIT Libraries

SFX-Verde Group Home

Background: SFX and Verde are, at this
point, linked in two important ways. *
Functionally, these two applications are
closely connected and will almost certainly
remain so. For example, the Verde knowledge
base will be populated by the SFX knowledge
base, and SFX will provide a primary method
of displaying Verde information to the
public. * Procedurally, the two applications
will require attention and involvement from
many of the same individuals and groups
during the next 6-9 months.

For these reasons, we are forming an SFX /
Verde Group to implement SFX version 3 and to
make recommendations on the future of Verde
at MIT. We envision this group as an ad hoc
task force, pending our decision to adopt
Verde.

During the time the SFX / Verde Group is
active, VOLT will be on hiatus and the SFX /
Verde Group will make essential operational
decisions in our present environment (Vera or
SFX.) If the decision is made to adopt
Verde, VOLT will be disbanded permanently and
the SFX / Verde Group (reconfigured, if
necessary) may be charged with the permanent
management of providing public access to our
eresources.

Charge: The SFX /Verde Group, working
together and in subgroups as required, is
responsible for the tasks outlined below.

* Make essential operational decisions in our
present environment (Vera or SFX,) bearing in
mind both current need and future directions.

* Coordinate the upgrade to SFX Version 3. o
Identify and test new functionality o Decide
which new features, if any, to implement o
Make decisions related to user interfaces for
all SFX features

* Coordinate the testing and investigation of
Verde as a potential management system for
electronic resources and licensing
information. o Test and evaluate Verde
functionality o Investigate options for data
population of Verde o Identify implementation
issues if moving from Vera to Verde * Make
recommendations on the display of Verde data
o Identify all possibilities for displaying
Verde data to public (in consultation with Ex
Libris, as needed) o Evaluate available
options, based on strengths, weaknesses, and
costs involved in each o Recommend a
long-term plan for display of Verde data to
endusers, taking into consideration the final
recommendations of the DMAG (DDT/ Metasearch
Analysis Group) o Recommend an interim
strategy for display of Verde data to
endusers, during period required to implement
long-term strategy.

* Make recommendation as to whether or not to
adopt Verde o Make a recommendation about
adoption of Verde, based on analysis of
information found in testing Verde's
management capabilities as well as the
options for display of Verde data.

Timeline:

Version 3 of SFX must be fully implemented by
July 1 2005. The investigation, evaluation,
and recommendations relating to Verde should
be completed by September 1, 2005.

Reporting and Membership:

The SFX / Verde Group reports jointly to
Marilyn McSweeney and Nina Davis-Millis, and
is co-chaired by Ellen Duranceau and Nicole
Hennig. Each of the co-chairs will head a
subgroup: Ellen, the Verde functionality
group and Nicole, the SFX upgrade group and
