Greetings to all of you for 1999!

Since the last update in mid-December on the Public Services Redefinition, there have been a number of developments I wanted to share with all of you. I have been focusing on getting the pieces in place to move ahead with implementation, and we're now ready for this next phase. Here are some of the decisions that have been made:

1. Implementation Team

I received a good number of responses to the call for volunteers to serve on the Implementation Team, but some units were over-represented and others were under-represented. That led me to contact a few people who had not volunteered to try to get a balanced membership that covered all libraries and all levels of staff. I also tried to appoint people who had already served on a task force since I believed that experience would be important in getting the group moving quickly. The make-up of the Implementation Team is: Michael Finigan, Michael Leininger, Margaret de Popolo, Deb Helman, Erja Kajosalo, Sarah Shreeves, Margret Lippert, Caleb Tucker-Raymond, Christie Moore, Paul Vermouth, Marilyn McSweeney, and me. Although Marilyn is from Collection Services, she has agreed to serve on the Implementation Team to alert us to issues that have an impact on Collection Services and to act as a liaison.

Those people who volunteered for the Implementation Team but who weren't appointed will be given first crack in signing up for other groups that get formed as part of our implementation. And, for anyone in Public Services who did not volunteer this time around, there will be other opportunities.

Based on the membership of the Implementation Team, I asked Deb Helman and Michael Leininger to act as co-convenors of the group. They have experience as co-convenors and work well together, which should position us well in getting the Implementation Team off the ground.

One final comment about the Implementation Team is to mention that Diana Haladay from Performance Consulting and Training will continue to act as an advisor on process issues. She has already been in touch with Deb and Michael, and she'll also be available on a limited basis to work with other groups.

2. Transitions

As you may have seen in other emails, on January 1, Margret Lippert became Acting Head of the Science Library, and on February 1, when Ruth Seidman moves to the position of Communications Coordinator, I will become Acting Head of the Barker Engineering Library. Deb Helman has agreed to be the Reference Coordinator for Barker, a new permanent responsibility for her.

3. Recruitments

We have a number of recruitments in process:

Institute Archivist--interviews were held just before the holidays, and we hope to wrap this up soon.

Head, Dewey Library--the deadline for first review of applications is January 16th

Head, Barker Library, Head, Science Library, and Associate Head/Reference Coordinator, Dewey Library--all of these positions will be advertised in the February American Libraries with a mid-moonth closing date

There are still some issues to be resolved, including the proposal for an Access Services librarian as well as recruitments to fill other vacancies. As developments occur, these will be shared.

Thanks for reading this long missive! As we move ahead with implementation, communication about our progress will be a top priority. In the meantime, best wishes for a great New Year!
