Internal Communication Task Force

Comment Form

10/19/98
The purpose of this form is to offer all library staff an opportunity to speak up about issues that relate to internal communications in the MIT Libraries. We also plan to hold a town meeting near the end of October to present some ideas and to collect your feedback.

Please note that this topic INCLUDES the committee structure of Public Services. A number of comments have already been passed on to us by the Organizational Issues Task force, which gathered a great deal of staff input during the course of their work. We include the OITF list here to give you a flavor of the issues already raised. Please take a few moments to add your own thoughts.

With thanks,

Rebecca Aaronson (rja), co-convener
Jim Eggleston (jceggles)

Some people have commented that a culture of polite silence and denial exists in the MIT Libraries. What do you think could improve our systems of communication to facilitate addressing, not only positive information, ideas, & feelings, but also problems, difficult issues, & negative responses openly & freely without fear of recrimination or the onset of cynicism? Comments:

-What kind of environment/atmosphere would your ideal communication system help create?
-What would that system consist of?
-What different types of communication would it involve? Comments:

On the one hand, communication or the lack of it is a constant issue. On the other, communication takes time and commitment. How important is it to you? What kinds of communication are the most important, one way, e.g. decisions and information dropping down the hierarchy? two way i.e. the ability to respond, to offer and discuss ideas? Comments:

-The ICTF and the PC-Team would like to ask you what you think about the ways the PC-Team has facilitated communication; specifically,

-the team itself, i.e. a fairly representative group of volunteers in charge of internal communication - a communication committee, as it were,
-the web for information and input,
-town meetings and focus groups for the same,
-the Lowdown

Now that Public Services has a new organizational plan (see Ginny's message 10.15.98 ), what are your ideas for the best channels of communication between and among the various departments and functions of our new organization? Comments:
