MIT Libraries

R2 Project

In the spring of 2006 R2 Consulting was engaged by the MIT Libraries to:

  1. Determine whether we can reduce the time spent managing print collections.
  2. Determine whether there are areas for greater standardized practices across the libraries to increase efficiency.
  3. Determine whether the current division of tasks between central technical services and the divisional libraries is efficient and effective.

In June of 2006 R2 issued their findings, based on their interviews with MIT Libraries’ Staff and their knowledge of profession-wide best practices.  In August the R2 Implementation Team was created and over the course of FY ’07 they issued two reports.  The recommendations in these reports have been approved (with some minor exceptions/revisions), and the Implementation Team was disbanded in the summer of 2007.  At that time oversight for the R2 Project shifted to the Associate Directors for Collection and Public Services, working with DLG/TSAC.

An R2 Project spreadsheet (pdf) has been created to track the specific recommendations, actions, and statuses of the project.  This spreadsheet will be updated on a regular basis.
