Using the MIT Libraries Logo

Design specifications

Image integrity | Sharing the logo with colleagues | Working with vendors

Image integrity

The logo should always be clearly and immediately identifiable.

Proportions

The logo must always retain the proportion of its original dimensions. Avoid distortion: use safe resizing techniques.

Colors

In print, the logo should only appear in these colors:

  • white
  • black
  • red
  • "MIT red" (Pantone Color Matching System #201--see color on business cards)

If your design calls for a different color, discuss your needs with Libraries Communications Officer Heather Denny at hdenny@mit.edu.

Content

Use only the basic dome-and-text logo. Do not incorporate additional words or images into the logo, or add borders or bounding boxes.

Sharing the logo with colleagues

After you've downloaded the logo, you are free to pass along a copy to any colleague who needs it. However, please refer any recipient to these guidelines. Help to maintain these design specifications.

Working with vendors to produce logo-decorated items

Discuss these design specifications with your vendor. To assure yourself that these specifications will be maintained,

1. Send the vendor three things:

  • an electronic copy or mock-up of what is to be printed
  • a hard copy or mock-up of what is to be printed, or a printout of the logo alone
  • the logo file itself: Offer a choice of .eps, .tiff, or .gif format, and provide your vendor with instructions for downloading the logo. (Note: An electronic document does not contain the actual logo file.) If a different format is requested, please be in touch with Libraries Communications Officer Heather Denny at hdenny@mit.edu.

2. Always request a proof. State this in your purchase order and send a copy of the printed PO to the vendor. In addition, confirm with the vendor verbally and/or in writing that you will be receiving a proof.

3. Check the proof's representation of the logo carefully. If you have any questions or concerns about the proposed representation, discuss them with Libraries Communications Officer Heather Denny at hdenny@mit.edu.
