SHELF PREPARATION

Shelf preparation ensures that all cataloged items will be physically accessible to our patrons. We use a variety of techniques such as call numbers, property stamps, and security devices to make library materials available and easy to find.

Rush Processing

To request rush processing for an item, please use the book request form.

Call Number Labels

MIT Libraries staff may request call number labels in one of two ways.

  • Send the item to Preservation Services as you would for any other repair, indicating on the preservation form that the item needs a new call number label.
  • Send an email to Nick Szydlowski which includes the text you would like to see on the call number label, and we will send the labels to you. We prefer this method for large requests such as journal relabeling projects.

Tattle Tape

Preservation Services provides Tattle Tape for the MIT Libraries. If you need Tattle Tape for a special project or for CDs and DVDs, please email Nick Szydlowski.

Enclosures and phase boxes

Preservation Services will provide phase boxes and other enclosures, when appropriate, for MIT Libraries items. To request an enclosure for an item please send the item, along with the preservation form, to Preservation Services, 14-0513. Preservation Services will determine the most appropriate treatment for the item and repair or enclose it.
