Collections Conservation

Collections conservation is the conservation treatment of circulating library materials. We perform these treatments in the E. Martin and Ethel Wunsch Conservation Laboratory.

How do we find and prioritize materials for treatment? Use is the determining factor. Both circulation and processing staff members identify damaged materials, check them out to Preservation Services, and send them to us for care.

The books are sorted according to their primary form of damage. This enables conservation staff to batch the repairs, which enhances productivity.

See the Book Damage Gallery for pictures of common types of book damage.
