Book Handling Guidelines

CRITERIA FOR SELECTING PAPERBACK ITEMS FOR COMMERCIAL BINDING

Look for:

  • Instructions on "Attention" slip
  • Instructions on Arrival Slip
  • Items with accompanying materials
  • Items needing tip-ins and/or repair
  • Items which are old and/or brittle
  • Loose-leaf notebooks

Select:

  • “Bind” instruction on the Attention or Arrival slip
  • Adhesive bound paperbacks
  • Large or heavy sewn paperbacks
  • Loose pages or staple bound sheets
  • Three ring binders and spiral bound volumes

Do not select :

  • “Do not bind” instruction on the Attention or Arrival slip
  • Conference proceedings, workshops, etc.
  • Items that are part of a series (e.g. no.572)
  • Volumes in a set (e.g. v.3)
  • RUSH (unless requested)
  • Physics Reading Room
  • Humanities (unless requested)
  • Rotch (unless requested)
  • Aga Khan material (unless requested)
  • Items for storage (unless in tough shape)
  • Foreign languages
  • Adhesive bound books with photos that bleed into inner margins – especially watch for Rotch books with this characteristic
  • Copy cover cannot be larger than 10.25” x 7.5” x 1.25”
