Approval Process

One or more times a year, the Office of the Director prepares a draft of the MIT Libraries' operating hours for the next semester or year. To do this, these sources are consulted:

  1. the MIT Academic Calendar,
  2. the Institute Holiday Calendar, and
  3. past precedent.

The Office of the Director will then alert hours-lib and present the draft hours for approval.

Designated representatives from hours-lib are given a period of time within which they may approve or request changes for the hours.

Changes other than corrections of typos (not unknown!) will be passed along to the Associate Director for Public Services and may be discussed with appropriate groups before decisions are made.

How does the public know the Hours Schedule?

The Office of the Director creates hours web pages for the Libraries' public web using the approved hours schedule. They announce the availability of these pages to staff through ps-lib. These pages are available in PDF format for printing.

The Office of the Director also prepares Hours Cards PDFs for the Fall and Spring term hours. Libraries can print these as needed using the publications system.

How do staff members know what the Official Hours are?

Check the public web hours page or the Hours Cards.

Feel free to contact the Director's Office (diroff-lib@mit.edu; x3-5655) with any questions.
