  • Books are held for pickup at MIT Libraries public service desks (except Lewis Music)

What are the loan periods for books?

  • Loan periods range from 10 to 28 days, and are determined by the lender.
  • Useful information can be found on the label/book strap attached to an ILB loan:
    • Patron Name & Email
    • Due Date
    • Author or Title
    • ILLiad Transaction # (necessary for requesting a renewal)
    • Renewal Possible?
      • Renewals may be possible, depending on the lender. If a renewal is possible, the book strap on the item will say “Renewal Possible: Yes”

      • If a renewal is possible, direct user to ILLiad to renew
      • ILB materials cannot be renewed via Your Account in Barton.

Dissertations

  • Requests for dissertations available for sale at ProQuest/UMI or providers cannot be filled via ILB

  • ILB will try to borrow dissertations that are not in ProQuest and can be borrowed as a loan from another library.

  • For more info, see Find a Non-MIT Thesis / Dissertation (this page is accessible from the MIT Libraries home page, listed below the orange Help Yourself links)

Take these steps to help patrons find and locate non-MIT theses:

  1. Find complete citations for theses using Proquest's Digital Dissertations http://libraries.mit.edu/get/dissertations
  2. Determine if the thesis can be borrowed from another institution or if it must be purchased from Dissertations Express http://wwwlib.umi.com/dxweb/gateway
    1. If the item is available for sale via Dissertations Express, we can’t borrow it. Give the URL and Order Number to the patron, and the patron can purchase the item directly.
    2. If you don’t find the thesis in Dissertations Express, direct the patron to the ILB home page and ILLiad, and we will try to borrow it if it can be borrowed.

Lost Books

  • If MIT owns a book, but it is marked as “Lost” in Barton, we will borrow it.
  • If a patron can’t find an item, we look for a status of “On Search” or “Search Initiated” in Barton prior to processing the request. Users don’t have to wait for the search to be resolved.
  • If a patron requests an item and Barton doesn’t indicate that it is lost, ILB staff ask patrons to initiate a search on the item first.
