Using WorldCat to Track ILB Request Statuses

  1. The most up to date status information can be found in ILLiad.

WorldCat may be used as a secondary option to help users who have lost their ILLiad password, or for requests made prior to February 6, 2006.

  2. Log in to WorldCat Resource Sharing http://firstsearch.oclc.org.

3. Select the Resource Sharing tab

3. Use the search box to search by:
· Patron name (lastname, first initial)
· Title
· Author/title search (first 4 letters of author, “/” , first 4 letters of the title)

4. Searching by Patron name is the best way to begin. The patron name will always be entered as lastname, first initial by the ILB staff. If a patron initiates a request through FirstSearch, their name is edited to the standard form by the ILB staff when their request is viewed and processed.

example: Joshi, S = Patron Name

Results of Patron name search:

If a patron has multiple requests in the system, you'll see a list to choose from. If the patron only has one active request in WorldCat, the record will open directly.

Select the linked request number, or use the arrows to navigate, and you can view the details of each request.

Request details:

Items to note in these results:

Status= Shipped which means the request has been shipped by the lender
Request Date= the date which ILB staff began requesting this item from other libraries
Receive Date = the date which materials are received at MIT. If this date is empty, the item is in transit. Items are not marked as received until the item has been delivered via web, or is placed on the hold shelf in Hayden.
Lenders= Tithe list of libraries from which MIT is attempting to borrow the item. The request goes to the first lender in the string, and moves on to the next library. The asterisk (*) indicates which library is working on the request.
Record Identifier
= the new name for the ILL Number

5. Searching by title words:

example: Current opinion in Opthalmology= Title

Title search results:

6. Author/Title (4/4) Search (monographs only)

Enter the first four letters of the author's name, and the first four letters of the book title. Examples:

Conservation Skills by Chris Caple
capl/cons=author/title

Soil Survey of Norfolk County and Suffolk County by Thomas A. Paragallo para/soil=author/title

4/4 search result:

Helpful Hints:

1. To go back to the main menu, click the "Return" icon or "Request Manager" from any screen. You can also use the Print icon to print out a request for a patron.

2. When searching by title, omit the initial articles in the title, but be sure to include stop words within the title, such as Handbook of community psychology.

3. If you've searched by patron and by the title of the work and haven't found the request, check Clio, or contact ILB.

The best way to reach ILB is by filling in the Status Request Form with your patron, or emailing ilb-lib[at]mit.edu. ILB staff respond to email messages and forms as soon as possible.
