MIT Libraries: Collection Services

Gifts Office

The Gifts Office is responsible for receiving and processing all materials donated to the MIT Libraries. Donated materials* may enhance the collections directly, by providing access to items that are otherwise more costly or unobtainable, or indirectly, by supplementing preservation funds through sales of gifts.

All material donated to the libraries is reviewed by a subject specialist to determine relevance to our collection. Material not accepted into the collection is donated to other libraries or non-profit institutions, placed in an MIT Libraries booksale, or sold to dealers. Proceeds from all sales benefit the MIT Libraries Preservation Fund.

Gifts of materials become the property of the MIT Libraries and all gifts are considered to be unrestricted. The Libraries will consider your gift for addition to the collections, but reserve the right to exchange, donate, sell or recycle items that may not be needed for the collections. We cannot return any material that is not added to our collections.

*Please note that as of July 1, 2007, we are no longer accepting gifts of journal issues as donations. We can accept issues no older than 3 years to pass on to a journal issue cooperative, but we will not be counting or acknowledging as a gift for tax purposes.
