Proxy Server: Getting a Resource Configured for the Proxy Server for Off Campus Use

Please note that the public interface to Vera switched on August 20, 2008 from using our FileMaker Pro database as its back end to using SFX as its back end. As a result, the information below is now out of date. The proxy server is now talking to SFX, not FileMaker Pro, to manage URLs. We need to update this document to reflect that change, and will do so when we are able. [kam]

See Proxy Primer for more information and background, as necessary.

  1. DigAcq staff determines that a resource can be made available off campus via the proxy server (decision is based on information in license or terms).
  2. DigAcq staff requests proxy server setup from Rich in Systems by sending Rich email, including the following information
    1. Vera ID
    2. Title
    3. full URL (everything in URLNative field)
  3. Rich adds the URL to a list in the proxy server.
  4. Rich goes into Vera on creek and sets the SystemOK field to Yes in the appropriate Vera records.

How to test to see if the URL is already in the list.

  1. Put the proxy string plus the URLNative into the address bar of your web browser (e.g., http://libproxy.mit.edu/login?url=http://www.sciencedirect.com/)
  2. If you get to the site, the base URL is in the list, and you can set the System OK field to Yes without emailing Rich.
  3. If you get an error page that says "Sorry, not available," it's not in the list, and you need to send email to Rich so he can add it.
