Sample
text about MIT's IP ranges:
It is
not unusual for publishers to be surprised by MIT's IP range. We realize
that you probably have not worked with an institution at this level
before. MIT was initially assigned its class A IP range over 20 years
ago, during the Laboratory
for Computer Science's early involvement in internet research.
MIT is
unique among universities in having a class A range; other class A institutions
are generally governmental bodies, large corporations, or standards
organizations. IP ranges are public information; for a representative
list of class A IP assignments, see http://www.iana.org/assignments/ipv4-address-space.
If you
need proof that MIT owns the 18.*.*.* range, there are many tools on
the Web that show ownership of a given IP range. Two such places are Schwarzl IP checker at http://www.schwarzl.com/ipcheck.html and American Registry for Internet Numbers at http://www.arin.net/index.shtml.
The MIT
Libraries must provide access to our electronic resources to the entire
18.*.*.* range, as the Institute has intentionally assigned IPs throughout
the full range. We are not offering access through more machines, or
to more people, than other campuses our size.
If your
system technically prohibits entering a class A range, some information
providers find that adding the equivalent in 256 class B ranges will
work: 18.0.*.* through 18.255.*.*.
Here is
a breakdown of the ranges we provide to publishers.
