Guiding principles for use of Central Networked Resources Fund (S-TEC-NETW)

Accepted by NERD, 2/15/00
revised 1/21/03

Reasons to Use Central Fund

Resource is available campus wide

Resource will be used by more than one divisional library's constituency, either because of breadth of field (e.g. environmental sciences) or potential to broaden audience for narrower field (e.g. a business resource that could have a strong engineering audience if access were campus-wide)

Resource is expensive, relative to local resources

Reasons to Use Local Funds

Resource is not available campus wide

Resource will not be used significantly by more than one divisional library's constituency, or does not cross divisional library boundaries

Resource is affordable, relative to local resources

Resource replaces a local format with networked access without significant increase in cost

When using these guidelines, NERD also tries to take into account the overall goal of balancing the interests of the communities served by each of the divisional libraries. In addition, the application of the guidelines may be stricter early in the fiscal year, and may loosen later in the fiscal year, if funds remain unspent.
