NERD
membership and charge
NERD's
charge was rewritten in October, 2001.
NERD
(Networked Electronic Resources Decision group) is a standing
committee of the MIT Libraries. The group is responsible for making
decisions for products to be purchased from a central fund designated
for electronic resources. Materials to be purchased from this fund must
fulfill at least one of two criteria: they are judged to be of value
to the users of more than one of the Divisional Libraries, and/or they
are too expensive to be purchased from the subject funds of one of the
libraries. Decisions on individual products are based on specific
criteria developed by the group. NERD is also responsible for recognizing
issues and unmet needs related to the acquisition and provision of digital
resources, and for advising the Associate Director for Information Resources
on their resolution.
While
the members of NERD represent their individual libraries in presenting
products for consideration, they are charged with contributing to purchase
decisions that will best benefit the entire user group of the Libraries
as a system.
Specific
responsibilities of NERD members:
- solicit
and report input from the librarians in their respective libraries
- communicate
group decisions, and the rationale for them, within their respective
libraries
- function
as product sponsors and monitor and assist other librarians within
their respective libraries in that role
- actively
review all purchase proposals presented to NERD
- participate
in trials and product evaluations as appropriate
NERD members
who are also CMG members, Reference Committee members, or Instruction
Committee members act as liaisons between NERD and those respective
groups.
