Patron may register at any circulation desk.
NOTE: Affiliates Cards are GOLD
The following are considered MIT Affiliates AND have borrowing
privileges:
- Spouses and domestic partners of MIT students
Spouses and domestic partners of MIT employees, retirees and appointed
international visitors
Note: MIT permits spouses, as well as partners, of MIT employees,
students, retirees and appointed international visitors to obtain an
MIT affiliate card, which entitles them to full borrowing privileges.
To obtain the card, the spouse or partner must apply at the MIT Card
Office, W20-021. The applicant should provide identification and proof
of affiliation, but need not be accompanied by the MIT employee, student,
retiree or appointed international visitor to apply for the card. Affiliates
should telephone the MIT Card Office (253-3475) in advance to confirm
the documentation necessary to obtain the card.
- ARAMARK employees at MIT
- Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology (HST) teaching
faculty with primary appointment outside MIT.
- MIT religious counselors.
- Technology Children’s Center employees.
- University Film Study Center employees.
- Academic Affiliates (SEE Visiting

The following are MIT Affiliates and DO
NOT have borrowing privileges:
- Voucher/Casual Employee (People who do not have an HR record and
can not be billed for replacing books/fines)
- Conferences (People who are here for a month or less for a conference)
- Contractor (People who are temporarily employed to build a new
wall, the Poland Spring guy)
ID Required: applicant must show MIT ID card (these are GOLD) with photo
and magnetic strip. “Affiliate” may be printed on the front of
the card. The Affiliate category will be printed on the back (Make
sure they are an Affiliate category which CAN borrow).
Registration:
· ID number on front of card. Permits student access to Your Account.
· Patron status: MIT other (03), Patron type: MIT Other – Affiliate
(3A)
· Expiration date: same as the MIT spouse/partner or 6/30 of the current
academic year for non-spouse/partner.
· Note field: If the individual is an affiliate of an MIT student
or employee enter the name and ID number of the affiliate (i.e.
Affiliate of…), or enter name of affiliated organization (ie. Technology Children’s
Center, HST, etc.)
AFFILIATES, DEPENDENTS

ID Required: The parent accompanies the child and presents MIT ID requesting
borrowing privileges vouching his/her status.

BOSTON LIBRARY CONSORTIUM (BLC)
These patrons can only be registered at Hayden Library.
ID Required: Boston Library Consortium Card with BLC logo, current expiration
and picture id.
Borrowing Card Issued: Plastic MIT Libraries card with barcode affixed
and expiration date sticker on top right corner of card.

Restrictions:
1. BLC patron’s privileges DO NOT include borrowing
from Rotch.
2. Their privileges do not allow them to borrow
current reserve books, theses, journals, Lindgren or Music Library
CD’s.
3. They can NOT place holds or recalls.
4. There is a 25 book limit on their borrowing
privileges.
Note: When they are registered, BLC patrons are given a BLC flyer,
along with their borrowing card, listing the MIT Libraries circulation
regulations and the borrowing restrictions on their card. They
should be informed verbally of these restrictions when registering
to avoid misunderstandings later.
DIBNER INSTITUTE STAFF AND FELLOWS
Patron may register at any circulation desk.
ID Required: MIT photo ID, either staff or affiliate type. The ID
number on front of the card permits student access to Your Account.
Registration:
· Patron status: MIT staff (02); Patron type: Dibner staff
(2E).
· Expiration date: 6/30 of current academic year.
DRAPER LAB STAFF
Patron may register at any circulation desk.
Draper Lab employees are entitled to borrowing cards.
Affiliates of Draper Lab employees are NOT entitled to borrowing cards.
Draper Lab retirees should be registered as MIT retirees.
ID Required: Draper Lab employee photo ID
Borrowing Card Issued: Gray plastic MIT Libraries card with barcode
affixed.
Registration:

GUEST, NON-REGISTERED STUDENTS
Patron may register at any circulation desk.
ID Required: Letter from MIT faculty or research staff member on
MIT letterhead confirming the individual is working with him/her.
The note field of the patron record should indicate the name of the
MIT faculty or staff member taking responsibility for any unpaid charges.
Borrowing Card Issued: Gray plastic MIT libraries card with barcode
affixed.
Registration:
· Patron status: MIT other (03); Patron type: MIT other- See
notes field (3F)
· Expiration date: date in letter.
· Note field: enter name of MIT faculty or staff member taking
responsibility.
HARVARD, CROSS-REGISTERED STUDENTS
Patron may register at any circulation desk.
Any Harvard student registered for an MIT course is considered by
the MIT Registrar as an MIT student and is entitled to an MIT ID.
The Harvard student’s MIT ID will be indistinguishable from that of
a regular MIT student ID.
ID Required: Current MIT photo ID card with magnetic strip. The ID
number on the front of the card permits access to Your Account.
Registration:
· Patron status: either Graduate (04) or Undergraduate (05)
student; Patron type: either undergraduate (5C) or graduate (4C) student
cross-registered
· Expiration date: end of current term.
HARVARD, "RECIPROCAL AGREEMENT" PATRONS
These patrons are registered at Hayden only.
MIT has reciprocal agreements with certain Harvard University Libraries.
ID Required: current Harvard ID.
Borrowing Card Issued: red plastic MIT Libraries card with barcode
and expiration date sticker affixed.

Restrictions: Reciprocal agreement patrons’
privileges DO NOT include borrowing current reserves, journals,
MIT
theses, or Music Library CD’s; they can place holds, BUT they
CANNOT place recalls.
Note: When they are registered, Harvard “Reciprocal Agreement” card
patrons are given a flyer, along with their borrowing card, listing
the MIT Libraries circulation regulations and the borrowing restrictions
on their card. They should be informed verbally of these restrictions
when registering to avoid any misunderstandings.
HAYSTACK OBSERVATORY STAFF
Patron may register at any circulation desk.
ID Required: MIT photo ID with magnetic strip.
Registration:
· Patron status: MIT Staff (02); Patron Type: Haystack Staff
(2F).
· Expiration Date: 6/30 of current academic year.
Note: Contract employees of Haystack Radio Observatory
are issued a Haystack ID card at Haystack Observatory and not an
MIT photo ID.
Contract employees with only a Haystack ID
card are NOT eligible for MIT library privileges.
INTERPHASE STUDENTS
Patron may register at any circulation desk.
Registration is the same as MIT
students.
LINCOLN LAB STAFF
Patron may register at any circulation desk.
ID Required: MIT photo ID with magnetic strip. NOTE:
Patrons may need to visit the MIT Card Office if the library track
on their card hasn't been activated.
Registration:
· Patron status: MIT Staff (02); Patron Type: Lincoln Staff
(2G)
· Expiration Date: 6/30 of current academic year.
Note: Contract employees of Lincoln Lab are issued a Lincoln
Lab ID card at Lincoln Lab and not an MIT photo ID. Contract
employees with only a Lincoln Lab ID card are NOT eligible for MIT
library privileges.
MIT, ALUM
See P-Card.
MIT, FACULTY AND STAFF
Patron may register at any circulation desk.
Note: When registering a patron in this category ask if patron has
a fixed term of appointment at MIT.
ID Required: MIT photo id with magnetic strip.
Registration:
· Patron status: MIT Faculty (01) or MIT Staff (02)
· Patron type: MIT Faculty (1A), MIT Visiting Faculty (1B),
and MIT Staff (2A).
· Expiration date: 6 months from the end of month the patron
registers.
MIT, RETIREES
Patron may register at any circulation desk.
Retired MIT faculty and staff members are entitled to borrowing privileges
upon request. Privileges may be renewed for an additional two years
upon request.
ID Required: MIT photo id with magnetic strip.
Registration:
· Patron status: MIT Faculty (01) or MIT Staff (02)
· Patron type: MIT Faculty Retired (1C), and MIT Staff Retired
(2C).
· Expiration date: 2 years hence. Privileges must be renewed
every 2 years.
MIT, STUDENTS
Patron may register at any circulation desk.
ID Required: Current MIT photo ID card with magnetic strip. The student’s
library barcode number is encoded in the strip. The MIT Card Office
(W20-021) will issue a new card if the MIT photo ID is lost.
Note: An MIT temporary ID card is acceptable early in
the academic term. This is a white plastic card with no photo but
with a magnetic
strip encoded with a library barcode. An expiration date is printed
on the front of the card. By that date, the temporary ID will be
replaced
with a photo ID with the same barcode number encoded. After that
date, the temporary ID card should no longer be accepted; the
student should be using their current MIT photo ID.
Registration:
In most cases, the patron record will automatically appear in the
library system’s patron database, since it will be uploaded from
the Registrar’s Office.
· Patron status: Graduate (04) or Undergraduate (05); Patron
Type: MIT Graduate (4A) or MIT Undergraduate (5A).
· Expiration date: last day of the first month of the following
term: 2/28, 5/31 or 9/30.
MITES Program Participants
These patrons are registered at Hayden only.
These patrons are high school students participating in a special
summer program at MIT.
ID Required: None. Hayden receives a participant list from the MITES
Office.
Borrowing Card Issued: Gray plastic MIT Libraries card with barcode
affixed. Sometimes, summer program participants are issued a MIT card
(with a picture of the MIT dome). Barcode can be affixed to this card
instead of a gray card.
Registration:
· Patron status: MIT other (03); Patron type: MIT other – see
notes field (3F)
· Expiration date: expiration date of program.
· Note Field: enter “MITES Program”
“PRIVILEGE CARD" PATRONS (P-Cards)
These patrons are registered in Document Services (14-0551) only.
The P-card is available to alumni, government employees, Industrial
Liaison Program affiliates and others as well as to the general public.
Fees for the card vary based on category of patron. Consult document
services for current information.
Borrowing Card Issued: Yellow plastic MIT Libraries card with barcode
affixed. Card is issued only at Document Services.

Alumni Cards issued by the MIT Id Card Office do not grant library borrowing
privileges.
SUSTAINING FELLOWS
Patron may register at any circulation desk.
ID Required: Presents MIT Sustaining Fellow ID card.
Borrowing Card Issued: Place barcode on back of Sustaining Fellows ID
card.
