Third Barton Transition

Question:

Is there a commercial Library Management System (LMS) which can be incorporated into the MIT Libraries infrastructure and which would improve our services, facilitate our management processes, and upgrade our bibliographic database?

Answer:

The Third Barton Project Management Team, with the support of the Assistant Director for Technology Planning and Administration and the Library Systems Manager, would answer the question posed in the affirmative and recommend that the MIT Libraries choose the Aleph 500 system from Ex Libris as our Third Barton system.

The purpose of the Third Barton Transition Project is to implement the Ex Libris ALEPH 500 Library Management System in the MIT Libraries. This is the final phase of a two and a half year project to select and implement a new library management system (replacing the current Geac ADVANCE system). ALEPH is expected to go live July 1, 2001, and final acceptance of the system is expected on Sept. 1, 2001.

The Project Team is responsible for delivering:

  • A fully functional ALEPH 500 system loaded with successfully converted MIT Libraries data by 7-1-01;
  • Staff fully trained in ALEPH functions;
  • Complete vendor documentation of ALEPH functions;
  • A summary of lessons learned during process;
  • a list of issues yet to be resolved.

For further information about the entire Third Barton Project see the initial project charge, the 3rd Barton Project page, and the recommendation (MIT community only) of the Ex Libris ALEPH 500 system.
