How to Make the Aleph Toolbar Disappear and Bring it Back Again

If you hate the Aleph toolbar and want to turn it off for good, read on

  1. Find the Alephcom.ini file (using Windows Explorer or My Computer). It lives in the following directory:
    • \Al500\Alephcom\Tab\Alephcom.ini

  2. Double click to open the file; it should open using Notepad.
  3. Change "ApplicationSwitchDialog=Y" to "ApplicationSwitchDialog=N." You'll see this line near the top of the file. Currently (7/10/02), mine looks like this:
  4. 		   [Main]
              ActivateSplashWindow=N
              ApplicationBgColor=190,240,215
              Diagnostic=Y
              AlwaysMaximized=N
              Compression=3
              CommunicationProtocol=0
              ApplicationSwitchDialog=N

  5. Save the file, and you're done. You may need to restart Aleph before your changes take effect.

Want to get the toolbar back? You have a few options:

  1. From any of the Aleph modules, go to the Options menu and choose Application Toolbar.
  2. You can still use the toolbar if you click directly on toolbar.exe; however, the toolbar won't keep popping up after you've closed it. You can find the toolbar.exe file in \Al500\Alephcom\Bin.
  3. You can also just not do the ApplicationSwitchDialog thing above. Instead, when the toolbar pops up, right click in the Window Bar (the blue (for most of us) part at the top of the window where it says Application... and choose Minimize. This will keep the toolbar running, but not make it take up space on your screen.
