BAG meeting 11/09/05
Present: Christine Moulen (chair), Lisa Harrington, Beth Siers, Rich Wenger, Elke Piontek-Ma (minutes), Denise O'Malley, Charlene Follett, Darcy Duke
1. Welcome to Denise Denise is the new circulation representative on BAG.
2. ICAU voting The group discussed the ICAU enhancement requests.
3. New server hardware update IS&T finished setting up the software on the new test server. Christine asked ExLibris to install Oracle and Aleph on the new server, but doesn't have a time line for this yet. Once this happens the new server is ready for testing, esp. for testing of parallel indexing. Christine is particularly interested to see how well this server will perform. Once the new test server is ready, we'll have updates of the data from the production server more often. We are planning to go back to a schedule of updating the test database every 3 months
4. STA suppressed Beth brought up the issue that staff members are requesting that records be deleted that are already suppressed (in staff Barton). If a record is suppressed already, we can not delete, because there are other records (order records, subscription records etc.) attached to it that we need to keep. Currently, the "suppressed" tag doesn't display in the search tab (in all modules), in the "full + link" view and Beth thinks that adding the tag to this display, might allow people to see more easily that the record is already suppressed. Christine has successfully added the STA field - right at the top - in the GUI Full+Link record display.
5. Web OPAC problem 1 Format and GMD are sometimes conflicting, which can be confusing for users - for example an electronic resource that has the format type book. Action item: Darcy will bring the issue to various public services staff members to find out whether it should display and will get back to Christine.
6. Web OPAC problem 2 When clicking on a link in the list of the Browse search result screen, the title displays unicode characters. Darcy will add this to the list of OPAC tasks to be fixed.
7. Web OPAC problem 3 In the title browse search, punctuation in the title is not displayed, which can be a problem when the title is an e-resource, because the designation "e-resource" is in the subfield ($h) that contains the punctuation11/09/05 . The piggyback task force had recommended showing the e-resource designation - the solution might be to display the subfield, but not index it. However, there is a problem with the way the title is shown in the title browse list if we own a print and an electronic version of the title. These titles will file together as one, and the $h might display or not (depending on which record was added first). If the $h displays that it is an electronic resource, it would be confusing since one of the two items in that heading is NOT an e-resource. Beth will mock up a couple of displays for Darcy to use to bring the issue to public services staff, since re-indexing would be required to show the changes in the test catalog.
8. BAG will not meet Thanksgiving week and the 4th week of December.
