Barton Advisory Group minutes for 10/10/02
Present: Michael Finigan (minutes), Charlene Follett, Stephanie Hartman, Erja Kajosalo, Kim Maxwell, Christine Moulen, Beth Siers

Priorities. The group finished the review of Barton priorities. The updated document may be viewed at http://libstaff.mit.edu/barton/.

Problem with global changes. Christine and Beth described a problem with the cataloger level on global changes. The global change process always creates a new CAT tag with NO cataloger level. The later time trumps the global-changed CAT tag, resetting the record back to cataloger level 00. There is a question out to Ex Libris on this.

Automatic population of BookPage forms. A discussion was held on automatically populating the BookPage form with bibliographic data from the OPAC by clicking on an icon next to the item record. It was agreed that while making it easier to fill out the form might increase the amount of in-house requests (and in effect place holds on items that are on the shelf), this would be outweighed by the service provided to both users and staff by having correct bib data in the request.

NAAUG conference. CDs containing presentations and handouts from the 2002 North American Aleph Users Group meeting were distributed.

New item process status proposed. Kim proposed a new item process status NR (for Never Received) to identify items that were never received but are not worth claiming because they’ll soon be withdrawn. This would display as Never Received in the staff clients and as "Missing" in the Web OPAC. Because some members had to leave the meeting early, a full discussion of the proposal was not possible; it will continue online.

Announcements. Erja announced that work on the no-frames customization of the OPAC is to begin next week.

Next meeting: Oct. 31
