When the
Institute is closed because of bad weather, the divisional and branch
libraries will attempt to remain open as usual, but with reduced services.
These
reduced services will include circulation and information, but not necessarily
reference. The divisional and branch libraries will determine the skeleton
staffing level necessary to keep public areas open and will arrange
with appropriate staff who live nearby to rotate skeleton staffing duties.
Other
public service units (i.e., Document Services, Institute Archives, and
the RetroSpective Collection) will be closed, as will Serials and Acquisitions
Services, Bibliographic Access Services, the Systems Office, and Administrative
Offices.
Support staff who are designated to work when the Institute is closed
will be paid in accordance with Institute policy. Specific details
will be announced by the Personnel Office after each closing.
Support
staff who are not part of the designated skeleton staff are not eligible
for premium pay and should not come to work.
If the
bad weather which caused the Institute to be closed worsens, the appropriate
branch or divisional librarian may choose to close his or her library
and send the skeleton staff home.
